The Base Larder

The Base Larder

The Base Larder, which opened on Wednesday, April 3, is designed to help reduce financial strain on households struggling with food insecurity. Operating every Wednesday from 3pm-5pm, the larder offers access to discounted groceries for a small monthly Membership Fee of £1. It is open to everyone, regardless of income or location, making it an inclusive resource for the community. This is the seventh Larder in Glasgow, and the second in Toryglen, with another located at the Cornerstone Community Hall.

The Larder operates through donations and partnerships with local organisations, including Urban Roots, which will provide fresh produce from its community garden in Polmadie. Urban Roots recently shifted its focus from the community garden’s adopted plot scheme to growing food specifically for the Larder, ensuring that affordable and healthy options are available to those most in need.

On the Larder’s opening day, around 30 people attended, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The initiative also receives support from other sources, such as donations from the SSPCA and suppliers of women’s products. With the cost of living crisis impacting many, the Larder aims to be a vital resource, offering much-needed relief to the community.
